The Microwave Syndrome - a Spanish study

Spanish researchers have found a significant correlation between electric fields associated with radiation from mobile phone base stations and the incidence of symptoms of “microwave syndrome” in exposed people.

The work was carried out in homes in the vicinity of two mobile phone base stations in a Nora, Spain. Electric field readings – which were primarily due to the GSM 900/1800 signals from the base stations - were taken in the bedrooms of participant’s homes and questionnaires were used to determine the incidence of selected symptoms experienced by the participants. The selected symptoms were those reported in the literature to be associated with “microwave sickness”,  “radio frequency syndrome”, or “microwave syndrome”.

Depressive tendency, fatigue, sleeping disorder, difficulty in concentration and cardiovascular problems showed the strongest correlations with the measured electric fields. Positive correlations were also obtained for headaches, nausea, loss of appetite, feeling of discomfort, loss of memory, visual disorder and dizziness.

As a result of this work, the researchers have recommended that maximum indoor exposure levels for radio frequency radiation be set at 0.02V/m (power density of 1μW/m2).
