Radio Frequency (RF) Testing and Shielding

radio_frequency_300.jpg Nearby mobile phone towers and household and business wireless equipment are the main sources of radio frequencies (RF) in buildings.

While controversy abounds regarding the adverse health effects of these frequencies, some conditions which may be associated with RF include

  • sleep disturbances
  • tiredness
  • headaches
  • irritability
  • forgetfulness
  • learning difficulties
  • tinnitus

Minimising RF exposure preferably involves elimination of the radiation source. When this is not possible, the use of shielding materials may be required.

Tips for reducing exposure to radio frequencies are included in the 20 page Building Wellness book which is available from our on-line shop

Building Wellness building biology service - RF testing procedure

When conducting RF testing of a home or workplace, the consultant will

  • Speak with you to determine your specific needs
  • Visit your site at an agreed time
  • Take RF readings in the required parts of the building using a professional RF meter
  • Measure radiation emissions from microwave ovens and wireless appliances
  • Discuss all readings and explain areas of concern
  • Recommend the easiest and most cost effective ways to address areas of concern

While there is much debate around what constitutes a safe level of exposure to radio frequency radiation, building biologists, who are concerned about the potential adverse effects of RF exposure, recommend low exposure levels that are in line with the most stringent international standards.

A written summary of the major findings and recommendations will be provided electronically within 2 days of the assessment.

A professionally bound written report, explaining RF's and their possible adverse health effects and detailing all findings and recommended solutions, is optional. If required, it will be provided within one week of the consultation.

Installation of RF shielding materials

Should you decide to implement shielding to protect your building from the radiation associated with nearby mobile phone towers, etc., our consultants can advise you about the available options (e.g. paint, fabrics, window film), arrange a quote for the supply and installation of  shielding materials and organise installation. We will take RF readings before, during and after installation to ensure that your building has been effectively shielded.

Cost of services

The cost of RF testing varies according to the building size and location and the level of testing and reporting required. Prices start at $165 (including GST) for an RF assessment of a 1-2 bedroom apartment in the Melbourne metropolitan area. A written summary of the major findings and recommendations will be provided electronically.

We will be happy to provide a quote for your specific circumstances after discussing your requirements with you. Please contact us for further information.

  • Safety of Pyrethrins and Pyrethroids Questioned

According a report published by the U.S. Centre for Public Integrity, in the ten years to 2007, there was a 300 percent increase in reported human health problems related to the use of pyrethrin and pyrethroid pesticides.  This finding is based on an analysis of adverse reaction reports filed with the EPA by pesticide manufacturers and appears to be associated with the growing popularity of these chemicals.

Hint of the Week
  • Reduce indoor odours

To reduce odours indoors, promptly clean up spills and remove spoiled items. Place a small bowl of baking soda in the fridge and in areas where odours accumulate, taking care to place the containers in positions where young children cannot access them. Fresh flowers, herb sachets and essential oils may be used to keep living areas smelling fresh.
