Pre-lease inspection- Office exposure to RF

Clinton was keen to lease office space in a refurbished building, but was concerned about exposure to radio frequency radiation (RF's) from a bank of mobile phone masts located on the roof of the building. He therefore requested that RF levels in his potential office space be assessed.

Test findings

RF levels throughout most of the vacant office space were at safe levels. However, along two walls, including the front window wall, readings exceeded the levels considered to be safe for long term exposure (Building Biology Guidelines).

Recommendations

Clinton was advised to locate desks, where his staff would spend the most time, in the back part of the office where exposure levels were acceptable. To protect people working in the front of the space, where levels were high, he was advised to implement RF shielding materials (paint and window film).

An alternative recommendation was to find another office space with safe RF levels throughout.

Outcomes

Clinton proceeded with the lease of the premises and located desks in the back part of the office space, as recommended. He has obtained quotes for shielding the front of his office from the external RF's.
