Electromagnetic Field Testing in the home.

Chris enlisted Marianne from Building Wellness to conduct electromagnetic field testing on her home. While she was not aware of any specific health concerns related to the building, she was interested to know if her living environment could be improved.

Test Findings

High magnetic field readings were found near the digital clock in the bedroom and the fluorescent desk lamp in the study. As the clock was not located near the bed head, the high readings associated with it were not a concern. However, the lamp was located near Chris’s sitting position at the desk. High readings were also found near the television, the DVD player and the digital set-top box in the lounge room. One chair was located beside these appliances. At all other sitting positions, readings were low.

Body voltage readings were also taken throughout the home to determine those positions with the lowest readings in each room. Such positions are the spaces where Chris’s body is least subjected to the effects of electrical fields from house wiring and electrical appliances.

These readings indicated that Chris’s bed and favourite lounge and dining chairs were already located in the best possible positions in their respective rooms. In the study, the position of the desk chair was quite good, but a position 60cm away was even better as it was further from a power board and electrical appliance cords that were on the floor beside the desk. In the kitchen, Chris’s body voltage readings were quite high at the bench position where she normally prepares food, but were lower at another bench about 1m away.

Recommendations

Chris was recommended to take the following actions to avoid the potential effects of the observed high readings :

  • ensure that the digital clock is always kept at least 2m from the bed head
  • replace the desk lamp with one containing an incandescent globe, as incandescent globes do not contain transformers and therefore generate lower magnetic fields than fluorescent tubes
  • the chair from beside the television to at least 1.5m away
  • place a small occasional table in the vacated position beside the television to prevent people sitting there
  • move the desk about 60cm to the right, while leaving the power board in it’s current position
  • prepare food at the second bench rather than at the current bench position

Client feedback

Thank you for doing the test on my home and providing the peace of mind that comes with knowing that I have nothing major to worry about as far as electric and magnetic fields are concerned. Where I did have to consider making changes, it was pleasing that they were quite straightforward and inexpensive – I had been concerned that if there were any problems, they would be quite costly to fix. Thanks again for your service. I have learnt a lot from your visit. Regards, Chris”.
