Electromagnetic Field (EMF) Testing and Shielding

Pylon Electromagnetic fields (EMF’s), as tested by Building Wellness, are lines of force related to our electricity supply lines and electrical appliances.  Adverse health effects have been associated with exposure to these fields.

Some people, who are particularly sensitive to them, experience a sensation of warmth or burning similar to sunburn, with or without the development of a red skin rash. Others feel tingling sensations in the skin and dryness of the eyes, nose and throat.

Long term effects of exposure may include:

  • Difficulty concentrating, dizziness, loss of memory
  • Headaches, ringing in the ears
  • Heart palpitations and breathing difficulties
  • Jaw and teeth pain
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Depression, fatigue, weakness
  • Immune suppression, cancer
  • Miscarriage, birth defects
As an EMF is highest close to the source and reduces dramatically with distance from it, reducing exposure may simply involve keeping at  least the minimum safe distance from the source. Where this is not possible, the use of shielding materials may be required.

Tips for reducing exposure to electromagnetic fields are included in the 20 page Building Wellness book which is available from our on-line shop .

Building Biologists, who are concerned about the potential adverse effects of EMF’s, recommend low exposure levels that are in line with the most stringent international standards.

Building Wellness building biology service - EMF testing procedure

When conducting EMF testing of a home or workplace, the consultant will:
  • Speak with you to determine your specific needs
  • Visit your site at an agreed time
  • Take magnetic field readings in the required parts of the building using an approved digital gauss meter
  • Obtain an indication of electrical field strength using body voltage readings, if required
  • Discuss all identified sources of EMF’s
  • Explain areas of concern
  • Recommend the easiest and most cost effective ways to address areas of concern

A written summary of the major findings and recommended solutions will be provided electronically within 2 days of the assessment.

A professionally bound written report, explaining electromagnetic fields and their possible adverse health effects and detailing all assessment findings and recommended solutions is optional. If required, it will be provided within 1 week of the consultation.

 Installation of shielding materials

Should you decide to implement shielding to protect yourself and your family or colleagues from sources of high EMF's, our consultants can advise you about the available options (e.g. paint, fabrics, metal sheeting), arrange a quote for the supply and installation of shielding materials and organise installation.

We will take the appropriate EMF readings before, during and after installation to ensure that your living space has been effectively shielded.

Cost of services

The cost of EMF testing varies according to the building size and location and the level of testing and reporting required. Prices start at $165 (including GST) for a magnetic field assessment or $220 (including GST) for assessment of both magnetic fields and body voltage in a 1 - 2 bedroom apartment in the Melbourne metropolitan area. A summary of the major findings and recommendations will be provided electronically.

We will be happy to provide a quote for your specific circumstances after discussing your requirements with you. Please contact us for further information.

  • Safety of Pyrethrins and Pyrethroids Questioned

According a report published by the U.S. Centre for Public Integrity, in the ten years to 2007, there was a 300 percent increase in reported human health problems related to the use of pyrethrin and pyrethroid pesticides.  This finding is based on an analysis of adverse reaction reports filed with the EPA by pesticide manufacturers and appears to be associated with the growing popularity of these chemicals.

Hint of the Week
  • Reduce indoor odours

To reduce odours indoors, promptly clean up spills and remove spoiled items. Place a small bowl of baking soda in the fridge and in areas where odours accumulate, taking care to place the containers in positions where young children cannot access them. Fresh flowers, herb sachets and essential oils may be used to keep living areas smelling fresh.
