Electromagnetic Field (EMF) Testing

Pylon

Are you concerned that EMF's from high voltage or street power lines,  power pole transformers  or a nearby electrical substation  may be affecting your health?

Or are you unsure whether or not the fields from fuse or meter boxes or electrical appliances in your bedroom or office are safe for long term exposure?

What are EMF's?

Electromagnetic fields (EMF’s), as tested by Building Wellness, are lines of force related to our electricity supply lines and electrical appliances.  Adverse health effects have been associated with exposure to these fields.

If you are particularly sensitive to them, you may experience a sensation of warmth or burning similar to sunburn, with or without the development of a red skin rash. Alternatively, you may feel tingling sensations in the skin and dryness of the eyes, nose and throat.

Long term effects of exposure may include:

  • Difficulty concentrating, dizziness, loss of memory
  • Migraines , headaches, ringing in the ears
  • Heart palpitations and breathing difficulties
  • Jaw and teeth pain
  • Sleep disturbances
  • Depression, fatigue, weakness
  • Immune suppression, cancer
  • Miscarriage, birth defects

How to reduce EMF exposure

As an EMF is highest close to the source and reduces dramatically as distance from the source increases, reducing expousre may simply involve keeping at least the minimum safe distance from the source in instances where the source cannot be eliminated.

Where this is not possible, the use of shielding materials may be required.

Tips for reducing exposure to electromagnetic fields are included  in the 20 page Building Wellness book, in the the Powerwatch Handbook and in the Healthy Home, Healthy Family book, all of which are available from our online shop.

Building Wellness building biology service - EMF testing procedure

When conducting EMF testing of a home or workplace, our building biologist will:
  • Speak with you to determine your specific needs
  • Visit your site at an agreed time
  • Take magnetic field readings in the required parts of the building using an approved digital gauss meter
  • Obtain an indication of electrical field strength in bedrooms, if required
  • Discuss all identified sources of EMF’s
  • Explain areas of concern
  • Recommend the easiest and most cost effective ways to address areas of concern

You will be given a hand written report at the time of assessment, including material detailing Australian and Precautionary Guidelines. Should you require a full typed report detailing all findings and recommendations, a fee of $195 will apply in addition to the consultation fee.

Installation of shielding materials

Should you decide to implement shielding to protect yourself and your family or colleagues from sources of high electric fields, our consultants can advise you about the available options and refer you to a shielding specialist for details of costs and installation.

Cost of services

The cost of EMF testing varies according to the building size and location and the level of testing and reporting required. Prices start at $297 (including GST) for assessment of  a 1 - 2 bedroom apartment in the Melbourne metropolitan area. You will be given a hand written report at the time of assessment.

Should you wish to combine EMF testing with radio frequency testing, prices start at $345 (including GST) for a 1-2 bedroom apartment in the Melbourne metropolitan area. You will be given a hand written report at the time of assessment.

Prices for pre-purchase EMF (magnetic field) testing of a home near high voltage power lines in the Melbourne metropolitan area start at $297 for a standard suburban property.  An electronic report detailing the findings is generally provided within 48 hours of the assessment date.

We will be happy to provide a quote for your specific circumstances after discussing your requirements with you. Please contact us for further information.
